SLO County Calendar of Events: October

by Ryan Baker

As President of the Young Professionals Networking Group, I’d to share some of our events with you, as well as other local events coming up this month. We are a 100% non-profit organization and all year-end net-profits go to local charities and non-profits. Many of our events are open to the public/non-members and we encourage you to check us out because our events are not just for “young professionals” – they are for the whole SLO community.

This month YPNG has three really cool events:

On Saturday, October 13th you can join YPNG and Woods Humane Society for the 20th Annual Wiggle Waggle Walk. Bring your pups (not required) and join Team YPNG in Tights on a one-mile walk through Laguna Lake Park. The walk is free to participate in, but as a member of Team YPNG in Tights we will be fundraising our tights off! This year’s theme is Robin Hood! There will be a costume contest, information fair, food booths and a raffle for more than 100 prizes. We will meet at Laguna Lake Park at 8:45am sharp! Register today by going to our website to join Team YPNG in Tights! If you can’t join us for the walk but would like to support Woods, please visit the Team YPNG in Tights’ Fundraising Page.

Wednesday October 24th our Professional Development committee is hosting a Home-Buying Seminar. This Seminar will give you insight on the information that you should be aware of when purchasing a home, and how to plan for a successful purchase. This Event is free to YPNG members, and non members are welcome to attend with a $5 Donation toward YPNG. You can sign up by clicking here.

Saturday, October 27th is one of my favorite events; our YPNG Halloween Golf Tournament.  Where else can you see a golf course filled with costumes and horrible golfers? No golfing experience needed because we’ll be playing a scramble format. There will be great prizes for male and female best costume, closest to the pin, longest drive, and the winning team. Prizes include a one-night stay in Cambria, wine from Talley Vineyards, a one-month membership to Kennedy Club Fitness and much more.

You can sign up by clicking here.

Other local October events (Non-YPNG related):

Arts for Autism (SLO)

Date:  October 12 – 14,  2012

Arts for Autism is a celebration of the arts and the many talents of autism, raising awareness and funds for autism services in San Luis Obispo County. The event is a three day gallery display in the Rossi Grand Lobby at the Christopher Cohan Center at the PAC at Cal Poly. On Saturday, the Gala Performance is a VIP opportunity to view the artwork in the gallery and watch stunning performances by talented performers on the autism spectrum.

All art is for sale, and proceeds are shared between artists and the Central Coast Autism Spectrum Center, thereby serving as a way for local artists to sell their work and raise funds for autism services in our community. General admission tickets are $32. Ticket purchase includes sponsored parking by the PAC. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Cal Poly Homecoming (SLO)

Date: October 19 – 20, 2012

Cal Poly’s homecoming weekend in the 19th and 20th.  You can check the website for details, but the main event will be the football game versus Portland State at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on the 20th at 6:05pm.

Harvest (Paso Robles)

Date: Oct. 19 – 21, 2012

Harvest in Paso Robles Wine County is a time filled with the scent of ripened fruit, scenic drives through rolling hills of red and gold, and the culmination of a year of hard work: the anticipation of a new vintage. You are invited to discover Paso Robles Wine Country during the busiest and most celebrated time of year – Harvest!

Join the personalities of wine country in the vineyards, on the crush pad, and in the tasting rooms. Indulge in a wide array of individual events at area wineries including vineyard tours, special tastings, and winemaker dinners. Take part in a blending seminar, or jump feet first into a two-ton grape stomp.

Howl-O-Ween Hoopla (SLO)

Date:  Oct. 25th 2012

Join the Parks and Recreation Department and the Downtown Association for a safe and exciting Halloween. Get the chance to trick or treat at downtown businesses, enjoy carnival games on Garden Street, and participate in the costume contest. 6 – 9pm at Downtown SLO’s Farmer’s Market.  Free to the public.
