Go green for good: plastic bag ban starts today in San Luis Obispo County

by Molly Schiff

Time to stock up on those reusable bags! The plastic bag ban went into effect today, affecting around 375 outlets throughout San Luis Obispo County. Paper bags will be available to purchase for 10 cents each, and  stores will also have reusable bags for sale.

Places like Target are even handing out a free reusable bag to customers (while supplies last) to encourage greener options when shopping.  Americans throw away almost 100 billion plastic bags every year, and only 1 percent to 3 percent ever get recycled. SLO County hopes to do it’s part on cutting down the waste and lowering this number. Keeping a few reusable bags in your car or purse is a great way to make sure you’re not stuck paying a little extra next time you’re out getting groceries.
